What is an Esta authorization

What is an Esta authorization?

Esta (Electronic System for Travel Authorisation), is the US Government’s electronic system for visa-free travel authorisation.

The ESTA can be obtained under the Visa Waiver Program. This program stems from the desire to facilitate those who intend to travel to the United States for a period not exceeding 90 days.

The Visa Waiver Program is in force in 39 countries. Esta authorization is mandatory for all citizens of these countries, who travel to the US for tourism, business or for transit to another destination.

Here is the complete list of all countries adhering to the Visa Waiver Program:

Andorra, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brunei, Chile, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Monaco, Netherlands, Poland, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Republic of Malta, San Marino, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan and the United Kingdom

What is the Esta authorization for?

Esta authorisation is issued by the United States Department of Homeland Security / Customs and Border Protection (DHS / CBP). This department is responsible for the country’s internal security.

The Esta authorisation was promoted in 2007 with the aim of creating an electronic security system which would allow greater control over passengers who use the Visa Waiver Program.

This system, in addition to increased internal security, guarantees a simplification of the bureaucratic procedures for those travelling to the United States.

Without ESTA authorization, it is necessary to apply for a visa for non-immigrants. The procedures for applying for a visa are longer. It is necessary to go to the embassy and wait for the allotted times (which may vary according to the type of visa).

Instead, the request to obtain the ESTA can be made online by filling in a form and requires a rather short time.

To request an ESTA, just fill in the online form. A prerequisite for obtaining the ESTA is the possession of a valid electronic passport.

The Esta authorization lasts two years or until the expiration date of your passport. You can also use it for other trips as long as they do not exceed 180 days in total.
