Why is an ESTA required

Why is an ESTA required to go to the United States?

Esta (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) is the US Government’s electronic system for visa-free travel authorization. It is an important security tool. This is why Esta is required to go to the United States

The ESTA can be obtained under the Visa Waiver Program (visa-free travel program). The program stems from the desire to facilitate those who intend to travel to the United States for a period not exceeding 90 days or are in transit and headed for another destination (as in the case of a stopover).

The Esta authorization is aimed at all citizens of the 39 countries which are part of the Visa Waiver Program. It is mandatory for all those who intend to travel to the US for tourism, business or for transit to another destination.

To apply for an ESTA, you need to simply fill in an online form and be in possession of a valid electronic passport. The duration of the Esta authorization is two years or until the passport expiry date. You can also use it for other trips as long as they do not exceed 180 days in total.

The Esta is verified both during check-in at the airport and at customs, upon arrival in the United States. There is no need to print out the Esta authorization, as the procedure for obtaining it takes place completely online. Border control officers already have access to your authorization
